How to Tell If Nutrition Advice Online Is Trustworthy

Search any nutrition question and you get two confident, opposite answers on the first page. Eggs are back; eggs are a problem. Carbs at night make you gain; meal timing does not matter. Both articles look professional. Both cite something. Neither tells you who wrote it.

The takeaway up front: you do not need a nutrition degree to filter this. You need four checks, and they take about ninety seconds per article. They are the same checks you would apply to any advice from a stranger — who is this, do they explain their reasoning, do they admit what they do not know, and what do they want from me.

Check 1: Find the author, then find the credential

Scroll to the byline. If there is not one, that is your answer — close the tab. An article nobody is willing to attach a name to is one nobody is accountable for.

If there is a name, the next question is what the credential actually means. This is where most people stop too early, because "health writer" and "wellness coach" and "registered dietitian" all look like qualifications at a glance and are not the same thing. Regulated credentials — a dietitian, a pharmacist, a pharmacy technician, a nurse, a physician — mean somebody licensed the person and can un-license them. Unregulated titles mean the person chose the title.

That does not make unregulated writers useless or credentialed ones infallible. It tells you how much of the article you have to verify yourself. Whether you agree with any given article, you know who is behind it, which is more than most search results give you.

The related check: does the site publish editorial standards at all? A page describing how content is reviewed and corrected is a small signal that somebody thought about being wrong.

Check 2: Does it explain a mechanism, or just assert a result?

Trustworthy health content tells you why something happens. Untrustworthy content tells you that it happens, loudly, and moves on.

"Drink lemon water to detox your liver" asserts a result. "Your liver and kidneys already clear metabolic waste continuously; here is what they do and why a drink does not add to it" explains a mechanism — and, importantly, is checkable. Once an article gives you a mechanism, you can test it against anything else you read. Once it only gives you a claim, you can only decide whether you like the person saying it.

Watch for the specific tells:

  • A single food framed as the cause or cure of something with many causes.
  • A number with no source and no range — "80% of people are deficient" in what, measured how, in which population?
  • Ancient-wisdom or suppressed-truth framing, which is a way of pre-explaining why no evidence will be offered.
  • Before-and-after photos as the primary argument.

Explaining the mechanism is also the whole point of good food writing more generally — it is why a healthy eating guide that tells you what a balanced plate does beats a list of forbidden foods.

Check 3: Does it name its own limits?

This is the check that separates careful sources from confident ones, and almost nobody applies it.

Good health content says when it does not apply to you. It says "if you are on blood thinners, this is different", "this is general information, not a diagnosis", "if the symptom persists, see a clinician". A site that tells you what it will not do — no personal diagnoses, no treatment advice by email, always consult a qualified professional for your own case — is showing you it understands the line between education and medicine. Content with no limits is usually written by someone who has never had to be responsible for the outcome.

Check 4: What is being sold at the end?

Not "is anything sold" — plenty of good writing sits next to a product. The question is whether the conclusion depends on the sale.

Trace the argument backwards. If the article's entire logic is "your gut is damaged" and the last paragraph sells a gut-repair supplement, the diagnosis was written to fit the product. If the article explains digestion, tells you most people do not need a supplement, and mentions one at the end for the specific case where it helps, the conclusion survives without the sale.

Free tools deserve the same read. A calculator that gives you a number and a reference range is a tool. A "quiz" that always concludes you need the thing being sold is an ad wearing a tool's clothes. A ninety-second routine

Before you act on any nutrition article:

  1. Byline? Find the name and what the credential actually licenses them to do.
  2. Mechanism? Look for an explanation you could check, not just a claim.
  3. Limits? Does it say who this is not for, and when to see a real clinician?
  4. The ask? Would the conclusion survive if nothing were for sale?

Three out of four is usually fine. Zero out of four is a content farm, and the fact that it agrees with something you already believe is not a fifth check.

FAQ

Is a .gov or .edu source automatically better? Usually more reliable for baseline guidance, but not automatically current or specific to you. National guidelines are written for populations and update slowly. They are an excellent floor and a poor substitute for a conversation about your own situation.

What about studies — should I read the research directly? Reading the abstract is better than reading a headline about the abstract. Two things to check quickly: who was studied (a 12-person trial in young male athletes says little about a 55-year-old with hypertension), and whether the finding is an association or a demonstrated cause. Most viral nutrition headlines are associations reported as causes.

Can I trust an article written by AI? The tool matters less than the accountability. AI-assisted content reviewed and signed by a named, credentialed person can be perfectly good. Bulk-generated content with no byline and no review is the same problem the internet already had, just faster.

Should I ask a pharmacist about food and supplements? Yes, and more people should. Pharmacy staff deal with interactions daily — including the ones between supplements, foods and prescriptions that general nutrition content tends to skip entirely. It is one of the most accessible clinical conversations available, and usually free.

How do I check a health claim quickly if I only have a minute? Search the exact claim plus the word "evidence" or "review" rather than the claim alone. Searching the claim by itself returns the pages written to promote it; adding those terms pulls in the pages written to examine it.
